We are in a tropical rainforest, which explains why the climate can vary rapidly due to the presence of microclimates in the area.
The best time to visit Arenal Volcano is during the dry season, which typically runs from December to April. During this time, you can expect clear skies and better visibility of the volcano. The rainy season, from May to November, can bring heavy rainfall and cloud cover, making it more difficult to see the volcano. However, it’s important to note that weather patterns can vary, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before planning your visit.
The most common way to reach Arenal Volcano is by flying into Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. From there, you can take a domestic flight to La Fortuna, which is the nearest town to the volcano. Alternatively, you can also take a bus or hire a private transfer from San Jose to La Fortuna.
Apart from visiting the volcano itself, there are several activities you can enjoy during the tour. These include hiking in Arenal Volcano National Park, exploring the hanging bridges, taking a dip in the hot springs, going on a wildlife safari, and enjoying various water activities such as kayaking or paddleboarding on Lake Arenal.
Yes, it is generally safe to visit Arenal Volcano. The volcano has been dormant since 2010, and the area is well-monitored for any volcanic activity. However, it’s always important to follow the instructions of your tour guide and adhere to any safety guidelines provided.
It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes for hiking. Additionally, bring sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, a rain jacket (especially during the rainy season), a camera, and plenty of water to stay hydrated during your tour.
The duration of the tour can vary depending on the activities you choose and the tour package you book. On average, a full-day tour can last anywhere from 8 to 10 hours, while half-day tours can range from 4 to 6 hours.
When packing for the Arenal Volcano Tour, it’s important to consider the activities you’ll be participating in and the weather conditions. Here are some essential items to pack:
Comfortable clothing: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that allows for easy movement. Opt for quick-drying materials if possible. Include t-shirts, shorts, pants, and a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings.
Sturdy shoes: Choose comfortable, closed-toe shoes with good traction for hiking and walking on uneven terrain. Hiking boots or trail shoes are recommended.
Rain gear: Arenal Volcano region experiences occasional rain showers, especially during the rainy season. Pack a waterproof rain jacket or poncho to stay dry.
Sun protection: Don’t forget to pack sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. The sun can be intense, so it’s important to protect your skin and eyes.

Yes, the Arenal Volcano Tour can be suitable for children, depending on their age and the specific activities included in the tour. Many tour operators offer family-friendly options and cater to the needs of children. Here are a few things to consider:
Age restrictions: Some activities, such as hiking or certain adventure tours, may have age restrictions for safety reasons. Make sure to check with the tour operator beforehand to ensure that the activities are suitable for your children’s age group.
Duration of the tour: Consider the length of the tour and whether it aligns with your children’s attention span and energy levels. Full-day tours may be too long for younger children, while half-day tours or shorter excursions may be more manageable.
Activity level: Assess the physical demands of the activities included in the tour. Some tours may involve moderate to strenuous hiking or other adventurous activities that may not be suitable for very young children or those with mobility limitations. Look for tours that offer options for all fitness levels or specifically cater to families.
Safety measures: Ensure that the tour operator prioritizes safety and provides appropriate safety equipment, guides, and instructions for children participating in the activities.
Child-friendly amenities: Check if the tour operator provides amenities such as child-sized life jackets, child seats in transportation vehicles, or family-friendly facilities at stops along the tour.
It’s always a good idea to communicate with the tour operator and discuss your specific needs and concerns regarding your children’s participation. They can provide more detailed information about the suitability of the tour for children and any age-specific considerations.
Tour guide Chris and driver William were excellent. I booked a full day tour of the Hanging Bridges, Arenal volcano hike, lunch at a local restaurant, La Fortuna waterfall hike, and visit to a thermal springs/spa. It was well worth it to have a guide for all of this. Chris was very knowledgeable about the wildlife and plants in the rainforests and was an excellent guide for this day trip.
