History

Ancient history and settlement.

Ancient history dates back thousands of years, when the area was inhabited by indigenous peoples. However, Monteverde’s more recent history is closely related to the arrival of settlers in the early 20th century.

In the 1950s, a group of Quakers from the United States settled in search of a peaceful place to live and practice their religion. These settlers, led by the American Quaker, founded the community and began to develop the area.

The settlers dedicated themselves mainly to agriculture, establishing farms and growing coffee and other agricultural products. They were also concerned with nature conservation and the protection of the area’s cloud forest.

In the 1970s, began to attract the attention of scientists and nature lovers because of its rich biodiversity. Biological reserves were established and scientific research was conducted to study and preserve the cloud forest and its unique flora and fauna.

Over time, became a major tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world seeking to explore the natural beauty and wildlife of the area. Hotels, restaurants and other tourist infrastructure were built to meet the needs of visitors.

Today, known as a place of natural beauty and conservation, where visitors can enjoy outdoor activities such as forest hikes, canopy tours and bird watching. The community of Monteverde continues to be an example of sustainable development and environmental conservation.
